Amoeba, the Cleantech company from Lyon completes a first financing round of K € 900 from Rhone-Alpes Creation Eurekap! and Siparex

Lyon, April 20th, 2011
Amoeba has a future. A trio of investors consisting of Rhône-Alpes Création (leader), Eurekap! Sigefi Venture Gestion (Siparex) through its “sustainable development” fund and FCPI Champlain Innovation, brings nearly € 1 million to Amoeba.
Accompanied in its incubation phase by CREALYS, Rhône-Alpes Region and the University Claude Bernard Lyon, the Lyon-based company was co-founded in July 2010 by Fabrice Plasson and Jacques Bodennec. It operates an exclusive worldwide license to a patent filed by the CNRS, which has highlighted the strains of amoebae that feed on Legionella and free-living amoebae -main vectors of Legionella – and on the biofilm (accumulation of bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa, which sticks against the surface of the pipes). These particular strains of amoebae are intended to deal with the risk of Legionella in water circulating in cooling towers found in many industrial sites.

Launch on the market in fifteen months

Rhône-Alpes Creation and Eurekap! are investing € 300 K each, Siparex brings 180 K € and the Dancer family 120 K €. Jacques Dancer (former head of Zolpan) is one of four investors from Eurekap! which includes also the Lyon-based businessmen Christian Lameloise (Helah Financial), Jacques Moyrand (Gattefosse) and Bruno Rousset (April). This capital will enable the company to carry out industrial tests in a few months (Candia, Cofely, Calcia, Jean Caby, SNF, STMicroelectronics, etc.), to validate the relevance of its solution, in the prospect of the likely authorization to market the product in fifteen months. In parallel, Amoeba launches an activity of amoebic analysis, aimed at operators of hot water networks, which can already generate positive cash flow. The company, which has already carried out laboratory tests on cooling towers, has acquired a fermenter to start its bio-production in two months.

A turnover of 1 M€ in 2012

«We are on a process of growth vigorously sustained by a very high demand for testing the product. It is true today that this disruptive solution permanently secures the industrial sites against the Legionella risk and anticipates completely the new 2015Water Framework Directive, prohibiting the discharge of chemicals in the environment “, specifies Fabrice PLASSON PDG d’Amoéba

“Amoéba has a very big potential and its disruptive technology has been validated by important actors of the sector. Tests introduced in industrial sites are moreover widened to bigger, strategic sections “, underlines Thomas RIVAL, analyst at Evolem. » Besides, the toxicity reports compare the product developed by the start-up to drinking water, which should open the markets of the treatment of sanitary warm water, swimming pools, thermal baths.

For her part, Aurélie WIROTIUS in charge of investments at Rhône-Alpes Creation, confirms this analysis: «the Amoéba company carries a project susceptible to bring the «miracle solution ” expected for a long time in the treatment of Legionella. Besides, it is a biological solution, which meets completely the evolution of environmental regulations. ”

“With the Champlain Innovation fund, we invest in projects designed by experimented entrepreneurs dedicated to the sector of Cleantech “, specifies Gwenael HAMON, account manager at Sigefi Venture Gestion (SIPAREX Group). » In a market dominated by chemical treatments, Amoéba brings a disruptive biological innovation and comes completely within the scope of the investment strategy of this fund “.

Amoéba should employ seven to eight people by the end of the year, and should end the year with a turnover of around 300 K€. It aims at approximately 1 M€ over 2012, tapping to a world market which is estimated at 500 M€ annually.

THE GIF, Grenoble Innovation Fair, presents new technologies. It is run by three organizations from Grenoble and in partnership with Lyon-based bodies. These organizations, actors in the development of innovating technologies, meet to present the best projects certified by the experts’ committee. Meet us on our booth in the area:
Amoéba
Created in 2010, amoéba offers a biological water treatment capable of fighting the risk of Legionella and amoeba in water. Based on our technologically disruptive patent, we redefine the fight against Legionella using a biological agent which eradicates Legionella and free amoeba such as Hartmannella and Acanthamoeba, vectors of multiplication of Legionella in water. This approach avoids and the use of oxidative and non-oxidative chemical biocides. It reduces drastically and even completely, the use of an anti-corroding product and anticipates the constraints linked to the discharge of industrial water loaded with chemicals in the environment.
Amoéba was the prize-winner of the « springboard of innovation » organized by the Senate in 2008 and also won the national competition of innovation organized in 2010 by the Ministry of Research

On June 30th, 2010, Valérie Pécresse Minister of Research, rewarded amoéba for the relevance of its disruptive technological approach in the biological fight against Legionella.

Jacques BODENNEC, scientific director of amoéba commented on this prize which follows the previous prize remitted by the senate concerning this project for the « springboard of research » organized by the Senate in 2008.

« Our biological approach redefines the strategy of fight against Legionella by attacking directly the vectors of proliferation of the Legionella that are the free amoebas, as well as the Legionella themselves. Our efficiency on 2 essential factors of the multiplication of Legionella in water, leads to treatment efficiency unmatched by classic treatments. Besides, our approach anticipates the future legislations on discharge in the environment since our approach is 100% based a biological non chemical product. »

During the Cleantuesday evenings of March 9th and of April 13th, 2010, dedicated to Cleantech, an unusual project, Amoéba, managed to attract the curiosity of the public. The idea, at the same time simple and innovative, questions totally the traditional techniques employed to treat water. The process consists in injecting the Willaertia magna amoeba, a protozoon that “eats” the Legionella which cause infectious diseases.

The special Cleantuesday on water in Paris invites amoeba on February 13, 2010

CleanTuesday “special water” in Paris invited amoéba on February 9th, 2010.
“Another of those evenings”, would you say to me at the canteen, hangout for the presentations of companies organized by the CleanTuesday association. The CleanTuesday association defines itself in the following way:
The CleanTuesday association aims at supporting the development of “CleanTech” or “ eco innovative technologies” in Ile-de-France and across France.
The association gathers professionals and specialists of the sector (start-up, big companies, communities, investment funds, etc.)
In this context amoéba managed to breathe a very strong wind of innovation on the management of the treatment of the Legionella risk in water. The persons present such as investors, institutions, business angels and large industrial groups demonstrated a real enthusiasm for our revolutionary approach of this market. The number of questions and requests collected at the end of the presentation shows it.
Fabrice PLASSON, CEO of amoéba explains: “it was difficult for me to answer all the questions which followed our presentation. But I would like to thank warmly all the persons who came to show their interest for the product or on the clarity of our presentation”.
You can find an article on the site “graine de Sésame” further to our presentation. (See article)

Amoéba offers a biological water treatment. We are ready to demonstrate that our offer is in perfect adequacy with our market. Today, we solve the real suffering of our customers, due to the lack of efficiency of the chemical biocides.
